Behind the Silence: A Spot Checker’s View on Suicide Prevention & Community Support
Did you know that every call made to SOS Silence of Suicide is supported by a dedicated team, including the people working behind the scenes. Our Spot Checkers play a vital role in ensuring that every conversation is held with care, compassion, and safety.
In our summer edition, we speak to one of our incredible Spot Checkers, LC to get a glimpse into the heart of this vital work and to celebrate the impact they make every day.
Q: Can you briefly describe your role as a Spot Checker and what a typical shift looks like for you?
LC: A spot-checker supports call-handlers by providing clarity, reassurance, guidance and gentle correction or reminders, where necessary. You will be required to contact Emergency Services in immediate risk situations, provide support with minor technical issues, monitor and check on the well-being of the call-handler/s, ensure protocols are always adhered to and “flag” certain situations.
A typical shift involves some brief but essential pre-shift preparation. During the shift, I support one or multiple call-handlers, and possibly new front-liners doing their shadow shifts. The duration of a “live” shift is 4 hours with an additional admin hour afterwards. This involves completion, checking and submission of on shift data and completion of an additional form also for data purposes afterwards.
Q: What inspired you to take up this role, and what keeps you committed to it?
LC: Reading about the role, I felt that it was one in which I could make a meaningful difference. The heart, drive and commitment with which SOS was founded and is run, the robust training and support, and knowing we – as a whole – make a difference in the lives of so many, is what keeps me committed.
Q: What do you wish people knew about the work that happens behind the scenes at SOS?
LC: SOS comprises a very dedicated and committed team who work tirelessly on events, services, training and various projects to improve awareness and deliver optimal support to its service users, voluntary workers and staff alike.
Q: Have there been any moments that stayed with you — for example, where you felt you made a real difference?
LC: I feel this way after every shift! My role involves supporting call-handlers, so you’re indirectly supporting the callers too! I get to hear wonderful, gratifying feedback from callers, alert emergency services as required, and make referrals for the vulnerable.
Situations and needs vary; it’s simply knowing that you have, to the best of your ability, applied your knowledge and “tools” to make a difference.
Q: How would you encourage someone who’s thinking about volunteering with SOS to take that first step?
LC: If you would like to join a wonderfully diverse, committed and supportive team; be heard and valued, and make a difference to the lives of so many vulnerable people, then DON’T think twice, I have NEVER looked back!!
